BIOGRAPHY

E. Elizabeth [Betsy] Sweetser is Of Counsel to the firm and works in the Commercial Law & Litigation, Estates & Trusts Litigation, Appeals and Employment & Labor departments.
I am a smart, diligent, and experienced attorney who, for almost four decades, has specialized in non-personal civil litigation and all types of civil appeals in the Appellate Division and Supreme Court of New Jersey.  I am frequently called upon by all departments at the firm to consult with and write legal briefs on their legally and/or factually complicated and complex trial and appellate matters because I am a creative legal thinker, knowledgeable strategist, and a highly skilled, persuasive, and successful legal writer at the trial and appellate levels.

E. Elizabeth Sweetser

She concentrates her practice in the area of complex non-personal injury civil litigation and appeals, with particular emphasis on trust and fiduciary litigation, partnership and shareholder disputes, insurance coverage and contract matters. Many of Ms. Sweetser’s cases have resulted in reported opinions.  She has written numerous informative articles over the years that can be found in both professional and lay newspapers and magazines as well as on the worldwide web.

After graduating from Rutgers Law School in Newark NJ, Ms. Sweetser clerked for the Honorable Herbert Susser, JSC in Passaic County. Thereafter she joined PR&A where she remained until late 2014.  She rejoined the firm in 2018. She is a graduate of the Harvard Law School Mediation Training Program and has served as both a mediator and commercial arbitrator in the Superior Court of New Jersey-Mercer County.

She also served for many years, by appointment of the New Jersey Supreme Court, on the Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee (Chairperson Part B) and the District VII Ethics Committee.  Ms. Sweetser is a member of the New Jersey and Mercer County Bar Associations.

Ms. Sweetser was a member of the Board of local not for profit HomeFront for more than a decade, where she chaired the Governance and Audit and Risk Management Committees.  Presently Ms. Sweetser volunteers with the ANEW Artists Alliance, whose members are outsider artists from Trenton, many of whom Ms. Sweetser met while volunteering at the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen’s art program. She was a long time Board member of The Princeton Festival, a summer performing arts festival, where she served as Chair of the Governance Committee.
