BIOGRAPHY

Jeffrey S. Monaghan is a Partner in the Workers’ Compensation department, concentrating his practice primarily on representing injured workers.
My practice is primarily concentrated in representing injured workers in social security disability applications and appeals and in workers' compensation claims. My most important responsibility is to ensure that my clients receive the full protection of the workers' compensation laws, including appropriate medical treatment, wage replacement benefits and a fair and just monetary recovery that properly compensates the client for permanent injuries they have sustained.

Jeffrey S. Monaghan

He received his undergraduate degree from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.  Following graduation from Seton Hall Law School, Mr. Monaghan worked in the Office of Governor’s Counsel in the administration of the Honorable Thomas H. Kean.  Mr. Monaghan then worked for the Office of Legal and Legislative Affairs of the Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Health and later as a Deputy Attorney General for the Tort Claims Section of the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General.

Mr. Monaghan’s settlements of note include a $115,000 recovery for a work related exposure involving Silicosis; a $350,000 recovery for multiple orthopedic and head injuries sustained from an individual being struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the street; $287,000 plus lifetime workers’ compensation disability benefits for a heart attack found to be causally related to the individual’s employment and a $185,000 recovery for a worker exposed to Lyme Disease during the course of her employment.

Mr. Monaghan is a member of the New Jersey State and Mercer County Bar Associations.  Formerly he was a member of the New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Inns of Court program.  Since 2006, Mr. Monaghan has served on the Board of Governors of the New Jersey Association for Justice and is the co-chair of the Workers’ Compensation Section.

In 2019 Mr. Monaghan appeared as Amicus Curiae Counsel for the Association before the New Jersey Supreme Court in the case of Kocanowski v Township of Bridgewater which concerned the issue of whether a volunteer fireman injured in the course of her service as a volunteer firefighter was entitled to receive certain workers compensation benefits. Mr. Monaghan argued that the injured firefighter was entitled to receive a period of wage replacement benefits in the aftermath of the accident. On February 19, the New Jersey Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision ruling that the injured volunteer firefighter was intitled to receive these payments.

In 2024 Mr. Monaghan was chosen as a recipient of the New Jersey Association for Justice’s (NJAJ) Gold Medal for Distinguished Service.  This award is the highest that NJAJ can bestow and is presented to an individual who has both made a significant contribution to the law of torts and advanced NJAJ’s mission to preserve and strengthen laws for safer products and workplaces, a cleaner environment, and quality health care. In 2021 NJAJ awarded Mr. Monaghan the Gerald B. O’ Connor Professionalism Award. The award was created to honor the memory of a legendary trial attorney whose advocacy and professionalism earned him the respect of his peers.

Mr. Monaghan is also a member of the New Jersey Commissioner of Labor’s Advisory Council on Workers’ Compensation.  He has given a number of lectures for the New Jersey Association for Justice and for the Mercer County Law Day Seminars.
