Aging Population Imperils Senior Care

By: Attorney Marc Brotman

Everyone is always getting older. Now this is true not just individually but for the nation’s demographics. An aging population carries significant implications for how we care for our elders. As this article poignantly demonstrates, our current system, which largely relies on informal, at-home caregivers, is becoming unsustainable. The changing demographics just won’t be able to support it.

The proportion of our population becoming older and requiring increased care is simply outpacing the number of people who can meet that need without outside help. More and more people will have to look to nursing homes and other long-term care facilities to properly care for their loved ones, further burdening an already troubled industry.

There are things you can do to help better the quality of care given to your family members, as well as everyone else needing professional elder care. Educate yourself on the facility you are selecting. Various websites, such as  Medicare Nursing Home Compare, can help. But, if a loved one was hurt, or even killed, by nursing home negligence, pursuing a lawsuit on behalf of your loved one can not only get them justice, but may also help maintain the integrity of the nursing home industry as a whole.

The attorneys at Pellettieri Rabstein & Altman are experienced and compassionate advocates for the institutionalized elderly and their families. If you or a loved has been harmed by negligence at a nursing home, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office for a consultation
